Our relationships may be the most important source of Personal Well-Being. We can enhance our personal well-being by pursuing eDreams within the Relationships Domain. The major categories of relationships are as follows:

  • Intimate Relationship - is an interpersonal relationship that involves social, physical and/or emotional intimacy. It could be a relationship with a significant other, a family member or close friend with some level of interdependence (social, physical, emotional, wisdom). We typically have no more than 5-6 intimate relationships.
  • Interpersonal Relationship - is a strong connection, deep friendship and/or some level of interdependence (social, emotional, wisdom). It could be a friend, family, colleague or even a business relationship that goes beyond a functional relationship. We typically have no more 15-20 interpersonal relationships including our intimate relationships.
  • Functional Relationship - are relationships that provide important functions in achieving our personal well-being. They are based on some level of mutual understanding, trust (credibility) and respect (competence). The relationship may not develop into an interpersonal relationship, though it is an important that it is functional (such as getting along with a family member, keeping a job, resolving an issue, collaborating on a common passion). Functional Relationships include:
    • Collaborative Relationship - are relationships that each person is collaborating around a common interest or goal.
    • Supportive Relationship - are relationships that a person is dependent on some level of support.
    • Transactional Relationship - are relationships that each person achieves a functional benefit. It could be relationship with your boss, business client or even a family member.
  • Social Relationship - are relationships that each person is mutually social, yet it has not developed into a functional relationship or interpersonal relationship.
  • Connection - are people that are mutually aware of each other or connected by something in common. It could be a neighbor, out of town cousin, acquaintance, or business associate that you do not currently have a more enriching relationship level.
