Intro - Managing Complexity
- Complex Goals - meaningful missions that require managing complexity, change, vulnerability, and many iterations to successfully achieve them.
- Complexity - the unpredictability of many impacting elements (known and unknown) operating, reacting and interacting in both certain and uncertain ways.
- Impacting Elements - people, realities and activities variables that impact achieving a mission or an outcome, if they are not identified, understood, addressed and managed.
- Complex Systems – are systems that are difficult to model due or predict due to:
- Too Many impacting elements for narrow logic and analogy reasoning methods
- Unknown impacting elements that are difficult to identify
- Uncertain impacting elements difficult to predict how they will act, react or interact
- Unpredictable outcomes due to change and uncertainty of impacting elements
- Adaptive system that evolves how it operates over time.
Examples include global climate, organisms, ecosystems, businesses, complex goals and human beings.
- Iteration Reasoning Methods address complexity by continuously:
- Executing toward achieving the mission (i.e., accurate weather forecasts)
- Learning how to improve the framework and strategy,
- Predicting progress, impacting elements, change and effectiveness of the strategy, and
- Adjusting the framework and strategy based on what is learned from iteration

- Enablement - the process of making someone able to do something, or making something (complex goal) possible. See Cambridge Dictionary
- Enablement Framework - a framework for achieving complex goals by efficiently guiding the understanding of the complex system and the effectiveness of the strategy through iteration. The enablement framework is a six-step process designed to:
- Identify, understand, address and manage each of the impacting elements
- Create and continuously improve the strategy objectives, solutions and measures
- Efficiently and effectively progress, learn and adjust through iteration
- Enablement Process - six step process to manage a complex goal pursuit until the mission-driven outcome is achieved
1. Mission
- Mission - a simple statement of the desired meaningful outcome to be achieve that often includes the purpose and/or the inspiration
PEOPLE ELEMENTS
2. Empathy - Complex System Thinking About People
- Personal Well-Being - our unique definition of good or satisfactory condition of physical needs (Health, Financial, Family and Support) and non-physical needs (Purpose and Meaning, Love and Connection, Competence and Control)
- Human Complexity - the unpredictability of people due to the interaction of their unique impacting elements (People, Realities, Activities), defintions of personal well-being, dreams, and complex goals.
- Collaboration – the process of two or more people (or organizations) working together to achieve something imagined.
3. Aspirer
- Aspirer - people who either want to pursue or are pursuing a dream or complex goal.
4. Beneficiary
5. Decision Makers
6. Contributors
7. Communities
REALITY ELEMENTS
8. Realities
- Realities – the fundamental truths that provide the foundation of understanding of complex systems, people, philosophy, physics, and other complex domains.
- Impacting Realities - the realities that impact complex goals, people, complex systems or complex domains.
are the fundamental truths (or impacting elements) about Complex Systems that need to be identified and understood to more effectively predict the outcome of a Complex System and may need to be addressed and managed to positively achieve a desired such as achieving a complex goal.
9. Complexity
- Managing Complexity - an outcome-driven approach to achieve a mission by addressing the impacting elements, creating a strategy and solution to figure out how to make it happen through numerous iterations.
Simple, Complicated and Complex - see Learning to Live with Complexity
10. Change
11. Problem or Unmet Need
STRATEGY
Strategy – are the top-level approaches and predictions of how the mission will be achieved within the context of the complex system (impacting elements) and change.
12. Objectives
13. Solution
14. Measures
ACTIVITY ELEMENTS
15. Communication
16. Operational
17. Funding
18. Personal Needs
19. Plan
ITERATION
20. Managing Iteration
- Iteration - a version of the mission, impacting elements, strategy, solution and design aligned to achieve an outcome, dream or complex goal.
- Complex Adaptive Solution - an iterative solution that achieves the mission by adapting to change and evolves with the uncertainty from complexity. It consists of continuous improvement of strategies, solutions and measures to evaluate progress.
- Iteration Generator - is repeatable process to efficiently and effectively manage numerous iterations when complexity creates uncertainty. It is designed to managing the complexity within dreams and complex goals.
- Enablement Design – is how the solution is to be created and how the overall pursuit will be communicated, funded and operationalized as weel as personal needs addressed.
- Create and Implement – is creating the solution and implementing the plan defined in the enablement design
